About my approach to psychotherapy

My approach to psychotherapy rests on a base of safe, open, non-judgemental conversational space.

To start off, we will get a clearer picture of your situation and your desired goal for therapy. Your situation and your goal will determine which areas of psychology and which psychological strategies we include in the course of your therapy, and whether your therapy will be short and solution-focused, or longer and include deeper, illuminating and possibly restructuring psychological processes.

I like to apply various areas of psychology, that have research supporting their benefit to psychotherapy, including

Humanistic psychology, which creates the basis for the safe, open conversation. It gives us perspectives and strategies that keep the value of your personal experiences at the center of the therapeutic conversation.

Cognitive psychology is the understanding of how we can work with our thought patterns and use them to change our feelings, reactions, experiences and results. The techniques that come out of this area of psychology are well documented and can be relatively simple to learn and use.

Neuropsychology is the understanding of how our brains work, and includes an understanding of how thoughts, social relationships, past experiences, emotions, physical health, life challenges and our personal environment affect each other and affect our mental wellness. When we look at your situation from a neuropsychological perspective, we get insight into which strategies to apply to improve your well-being and your life.

Positive psychology is the understanding of how we become happy. Psychology has traditionally focused on how we can overcome challenges, but this branch of psychology moves us beyond overcoming challenges, and brings us towards a higher state of well-being, by giving us insights and techniques to help you improve and maintain happiness.

Post-traumatic growth falls within the framework of positive psychology, and focuses on how to create a deeper quality of life, as part of the process of healing after a traumatic experience.

Cultural psychology gives us insight into how our individual culture, or combinations of cultures, affect our experience of life, our relationships, our beliefs and our decisions. The culture we are immersed in can seem invisible because we are so used to it, but it affects us in profound ways. Being Danish and Canadian, and spending most of my life living abroad, I appreciate the importance of being aware of, understanding and integrating your personal cultural influences in a way that supports your psychological health.

These are examples of some of the psychological approaches to therapy I use in our meetings. If you have any questions for me, about my approach, the talks and workshops I offer, my background or anything else, you are welcome to contact me.

About our meeting

The conversations last an hour and 15 minutes, to give us time to go through the therapeutic processes that are important for your well-being. You also have the option of shorter meetings of 30 minutes, when this fits with your therapeutic process.

You are often given simple assignments, steps you can take in your everyday life, to help integrate what you have learned from the therapy session into your life.

The conversations take place online via GDPR-approved video conferencing, and so you can meet with me where it is comfortable and convenient for you.  They can also take place by telephone if that is preferable for you.
